Endoscopic Evaluation In Early Gastric Cancer
Dr. Erkin ÖZTAŞ,a Dr. Murat TÖRÜNERa
aGastroenteroloji BD, Ankara Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, ANKARA Gastric cancer is the second common cause of cancer related deaths. Prognosis is poor and 5 year survival is 10%. In early gastric cancer, disease is limited in mucosa and submucosa. The incidence of early gastric cancer has been generally increased, however, 5 year survival rates in Japan and western countries has been reported as 90% and 88%, respectively. In Japan, surveillance for early gastric cancer is performed even in patients with mild dyspeptic symptoms; therefore gastroenterologists in Japan are experienced in this area. Paris classification for macroscopic evaluation of early gastric cancer has been generally accepted. Early detection of gastric cancer provides higher survival rates and increases the probability of a minimal invasive surgery-endoscopical total resection. In recent years, some endoscopical techniques which increase reliability and accuracy of endoscopic diagnosis have been developed and introduced to routine practice. These techniques are so important because of their vital role in early diagnosis, curative treatment and increased survival rates. Keywords: Stomach neoplasms; endoscopy, gastrointestinal; early diagnosisTurkiye Klinikleri J Surg Med Sci 2007, 3(44):9-14
