Diagnosis Of Gastric Cancer
Dr. Bahattin ÇİÇEKa
aGastroenteroloji Kliniği, Türkiye Yüksek İhtisas Eğitim ve Araştırma Hastanesi, ANKARA Gastric cancer is still the second leading cause of cancer death worldwide despite considerable geographical variation. Turkey remains in the high incidence area for gastric cancer. Despite the developments in medicine, 5-year survival rate of patients with symptomatic gastric cancer is approximately 20%. On the other hand more than half of the asymptomatic gastric cancer patients diagnosed by mass screening programs have early gastric cancer, and 5-year survival rate is greater than 80% in these patients. Therefore people above 40-years-old should be screened without waiting alarm symptoms in order to increase the survival. But endoscopic screening which is the gold standart in the diagnosis of gastric cancer has a cost disadvantage. There is no country which is currently applying a screening program, except Japan. Serologic detection of Helicobacter pylori associated atrophic gastritis and endoscopic screening to those with severe chronic atrophic gastritis profile can be a cost-effective strategy. Keywords: Gastric cancer, mass screening, atrophic gastritisTurkiye Klinikleri J Surg Med Sci 2007, 3(44):1-5
